BATTERERS’ INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR FEMALES
This program is designed to meet the needs of female perpetrators. This intensive program is designed to individually assess and treat each client at their particular level of readiness. Central to all programming is the belief that individuals must accept responsibility for the abuse and violence committed against their partners and/or others. This program offers practical, positive alternatives to violence.
BATTERERS’ INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR MALES
This program is designed to meet the needs of male perpetrators. Kent House’s Batterers’ Intervention Program meets standards for the criminal justice referrals. The Batterers’ Intervention Program is a twenty week program consisting of one two hour session per week. Although most clients are referred through the court system, this domestic violence curriculum is extremely helpful for anyone hoping to reduce the violence in their current relationships.
GROUP LEADER: Edward Degnan, BA, Coordinator of Domestic Violence and Judicial Services, is a 35 year veteran of the criminal justice system in Rhode Island. During his tenure as probation officer, probation supervisor, and ultimately senior hearing officer, he observed how uncontrolled anger interrupts attempts at effective communication, often leading to mandated involvement with the legal system. By heading up the Violence Intervention Project at Kent House, he brings his expertise in anger and related men’s issues to those seeking change.
ANGER MANAGEMENT
Anger is a powerful emotion that some people handle in healthy, constructive ways. For many people, the way in which they handle anger causes serious problems. Recovery from mental health or addictive disorders often involves learning to deal with anger efficiently. Many people are unable to express anger directly and instead, let it build up. Others respond inappropriately when angered. They become abusive or violent in what they say and how they act.
This group is designed to help the individual who is having problems coping with anger. It will help the members identify and discuss their problems with anger and begin to learn healthy coping strategies to keep anger at bay.
The goal of anger management is to assist the participants to manage their emotional feelings and the physiological arousal that anger causes. Relaxation techniques, cognitive restructuring, problem solving techniques, communication skills, humor, and assertiveness training are among the anger management strategies group members will learn to help them to express anger effectively.
