Residential Program

The Kent House Residential Program is a Residential Treatment Facility for men.  It is in operation twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

After eighteen years, the Kent House Residential Treatment Program remains rooted in its tradition as a halfway house for recovering alcoholics, yet it has evolved in response to:

  • The improved scientific knowledge and treatment techniques which have become available in the field of addictions;
  • The resources available which have increased over the years as the State and the nation have responded to the seriousness of the substance abuse problem; and
  • The needs of the client population which chooses to come to Kent house.

The client population has changed: today, a typical client is 29 years of age; he is a poly-substance abuser from a multi-problem, dysfunctional family who began to use mind and mood altering substances even before the onset of adolescence.  He arrives at Kent House with multiple and familial problems.  Usually he has tried treatment before - short term intensive inpatient and outpatient treatment.  He has also tried AA, NA, etc. as a means to maintain his recovery.  He has relapsed repeatedly.

We receive approximately 600 phone calls per year from prospective clients.  We have the capacity to conduct at least 250 intake assessments to determine the appropriateness for prospective clients.

The Kent House treatment modality is geared to Relapse Prevention through empowerment of the client who carries the responsibility of his own recovery.  In addition to meeting the obvious needs - providing a safe, drug free living environment and assisting the client's search for employment and financial stability, a highly structured educational component based on Terrence T. Gorski's relapse prevention program is used.

We also assist the client in developing an understanding of the complexity of the psychological factors, irrational beliefs, addictive logic, etc. that have contributed to his addiction to psychoactive substances and why he finds it necessary to mood and mind alter.

We utilize the developmental model of recovery to identify presenting problems, current stage of recovery, patterns of relapse, and emerging problems which would put a client at risk for relapse.  We develop an individualized treatment plan which necessarily involves a variable treatment to assist the client through the difficult first year of the recovery process.

Our Residential Treatment Program provides fo a maximum of six months for clients to work on bringing about the personal changes in themselves that are necessary to enhance their chance at successful recovery from substance abuse.  We believe in creating a nurturing and supportive environment that is designed to therapeutically enhance their self-esteem, value, and worth.  We believe in providing an opportunity to develop essential resources necessary to achieve the common goal of independent living with a drug free lifestyle.
